This project deals with the conversion of a movie theatre built in 1938 in the centre of Timișoara. The building is a state property with great value because of its position, but it lies in a bad state without any activity. According to the cultural institutes of Timișoara, the city needs more room for cultural events. We propose a multifunctional cultural centre with two flexible halls, to reflect on this need.
The old movie theatre is a very pragmatical construction, trying to exploit the given space as much as possible, but it doesn`t fit anymore to the actual needs and norms. Therefore, we propose to erase the inner structure, keeping the self-sustaining outer walls and roof. We propose an underground level and a new skeletal structure inside, which consolidates the old one, and defines the new interior space. The two halls are placed with a technical floor between them, to reduce the lengths of the service ways and to isolate the two halls from each other. The building doesn`t change from the outside, but the interior is densified trough the new rooms and activities.
The visitor is driven trough all the parts of the building. The shapes of the interior spaces are various, from narrow, but high spaces, to wide but low spaces. A spectacular long stair connects the entrance level with the foyer of the top level – the two public spaces with natural light. The middle positioned technical floor remains hidden from the visitor, as a secret motor of the building. The two halls have a neutral caracter. The hall from the top floor puts in value the original concrete roof structure and projection room. The „between” spaces (the lobbies, the cafe and service spaces) have an industrial character.
The intervention tries to animate the public space trough out the cultural activities, the cafe on the street level and the summer terrace in the nearby park.
